Square Enix Unveils Avian Ally and Crossbow Combat for Evercold Expansion

Fans gathered at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Tokyo received a thrilling update on the upcoming Evercold expansion, as producer and director Naoki Yoshida introduced the latest addition to the game’s combat roster. The new job, known as the Zephyr, enters the fray as a physical ranged DPS specialist. Rather than fighting alone, those playing as a Zephyr will utilize a powerful crossbow paired with a loyal avian familiar named Nephele, creating a dynamic duo capable of raining down destruction from a distance. This revelation follows the earlier announcement of the Bastion, a heavy hitting tank equipped with a massive greatshield.

With Evercold set to launch on February 23, 2027, players can already begin preparing through pre orders starting November 4. Those who secure their copy early will receive immediate perks including Halone’s Earring to boost experience gains and a charming Wind Up Kottr minion. For collectors, Square Enix is offering various bundles ranging from digital editions featuring exclusive mounts and weapons to a high end physical Collector’s Box containing custom figures and tapestry work illustrated by legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano.

Beyond new classes, the keynote detailed several systemic overhauls designed to refresh the gameplay loop. A new Fierce raid difficulty will bridge the gap between Normal and Savage encounters, while an Evolved Combat Mode aims to make each job feel more distinct. The developers also teased highly anticipated crossovers, including an Evangelion themed alliance raid and new content tied to Final Fantasy 7 Remake under the Beyond the Lifestream banner. These additions come as the game celebrates a massive milestone of 35 million registered accounts across multiple platforms, including its recent arrival on Switch 2.
